What we have been learning this week

Welcome Fox Class, who have settled into Yr 1 very well. They have been busy all week, with lots of exciting learning. 

In maths the children have been learning about sorting objects into different groups. They were encouraged to think of a variety of different ways to sort the groups, eg, a group of children could be grouped into girls and boys or different hair colour. They have also been practising their counting and working on pointing and moving the objects away to the side, once they have counted them for accuracy. 

In English the children have been reading a book called "Flotsam".  It is a special book that doesn't have any words. The children have had to look at the pictures carefully and narrate what is happening. They have then turned their story telling into story writing by writing captions to go with the pictures from the book. 

Also this week we have started learning about our new topic, "Under the Sea".  We have looked at a variety of animals that might live in this habitat, and have learnt some interesting facts about them. 

What we shall be working on next week

Next week the children will continue to practise their counting forwards and backwards. They will also look at sequencing stories and start writing their own. We will also look at categorising animals under the sea. 

How you can help with home learning

Please read daily with your child. It really supports their learning at school. It improves their phonics knowledge, spelling and writing abilities. It would also be helpful to look at capital letters and lower case letters, as well as looking at the alphabet. If you see any opportunity to count at home, please do encourage it. This may be counting the stairs up and down, counting the peas on their plate, etc, etc.

General information

Homework will be given out this week which will be a little activity to support your child's knowledge of capital letters and lower case letters. It will be due back into school on Thursday please.

Spelling tests will start in a few weeks' time, once the children have had a chance to settle into their new Yr 1 routines.
