What we have been learning this week

This week saw Badger Class complete their first full week in school and they have worked so well together.  The children have been reading books about Katie Morag and finding out what type of character she has. Character descriptions about Katie have been written and punctuation, grammar and handwriting have been the focus in enabling the children to edit their work.

In mathematics the children have been partitioning two digit numbers into different combinations of tens and ones, exploring their thinking verbally in pictures and using apparatus.

The children have also enjoyed learning in their outside area.  The activities and challenges have reinforced/extended their learning and they have focused on developing independence in some activities and evaluating their learning with partners and the whole class.  They also enjoyed walking around the village and finding out special features on maps.

What we shall be working on next week

The children will be preparing for their lead role in the Macmillan Coffee Morning on Wednesday, 26 September – please note that this date has had to be changed.  They are looking forward to making invitations, inviting grown-ups to bake cakes and involve our local community.

How you can help with home learning

You can practice partitioning numbers by using practical objects. It is important that the children partition numbers in a variety of ways, not just in tens and ones.  For example, 58 is made up of 5 tens and 8 ones or 4 tens and 18 ones, or 20 tens and 38 ones.  You could use lego bricks, toy cars, pasta, etc.  Please help your child to explain their reasoning and how they have partitioned the numbers.

General information

Please note that the "Meet the Teacher" session for Badger Class has been postponed until further notice.

As previously mentioned, Forest School will take place next week.  Half the class will participate this half term and the other half will participate after half term.  If your child is taking part in Forest School this half term, you will shortly receive an email with a reminder of what your child will need to bring to school on that day.
