Fox Class and Red Riding Hood

22.09.17

What we have been learning this week

This week the children have enjoyed continuing the story "Super Red Riding Hood". Before listening to the end of the story they used their imagainations to think about what they thought might happen. They have also been writing sentences to match pictures from the text. The children are being encouraged to use displays in the classroom to help them check their own writing for capital letters in the right place, finger spaces and full stops. Once the children had formulated their ideas we used cubes to represent words in their sentence. Then the children pointed to these as they were asked to practise their sentence aloud a number of times before writing it.

In phonics at the moment we are recapping the sounds learnt in Rabbits. This week we have revisited the digraphs (two letters that make one sound) SH, CH, TH and NG.

All the children have been practising counting in 2s and recognising numbers in the 2s pattern this week. We have taught the children the pattern of starting on 0, counting one, then skipping over one, counting one, skipping over one. It has been fantastic to see the children take this teacher-led learning into their own independent learning. Some worked together to make 2s patterns with our counting toys, others ordered our counting mats and then hopped round on the numbers in the 2s pattern. Some showed each other the 2s pattern on our class 100-square and most children spent time practising writing the 2s pattern on whiteboards. Lovely team work children - well done!

The children also used their 'noticing' learning tool this week to look carefully at their faces and draw self-portraits. They were encouraged to think carefully about size, shape and positioning.

What we shall be working on next week

In English next week the children will exploring character traits by looking at the story "Super Potato", and developing strategies for addition in maths.

How you can help with home learning

Any practise of counting in 2s in real life contexts from 0 or starting from any even number would support the children's learning this week. We have been asking them to ensure they prounounce the numbers accurately and use the right end sound, eg, fourTEEN or forTY?

Also keep looking out for those digraphs SH, CH, TH and NG in their reading books, books at home, signs, labels and when you're out and about.

General Information

Please note the children's phonic homework is due to be returned this Monday, 25 September.
