What we have been learning this week

This week in maths Foxes have been focussing on addition. They have been practising their number bonds to 10 and they can now recognise that 10 is the whole number and splitting it into two parts helps us make the addition number sentence. 

In English this week the children have learnt the story of Holi and why Holi is celebrated. They have been practising the story by re-telling it orally and thinking of actions to help them. They have also been able to break the story into parts and put those parts into a story mountain. This will help the children next week in their writing task. 

On Tuesday morning Fox Class went on a trip to St John's church where they they acted out a Christening.  They got to see exactly what happens during a christening service. They also drew pictures of the stained glass windows and learnt about the altar, lectern and pews.  We will go on to compare and contrast St John's Church with Guildford Cathedral.  As well as visiting the church the children thought about Remembrance Day and we spoke about why we wear poppies around the time of 11 November. They even made their own poppies!

What we shall be working on next week

Next week we will be using our number bond knowledge to 10 to support related subtraction facts. In English we will be performing our story during assembly and writing our own version of the story. 

How you can help with home learning

When at home you could practise number bonds to 10. We like to play number bond tennis at school!  You pretend to throw a number such as 8, then the children need to pretend to serve the number that needs to be added to make 10, eg, 2. 

Please continue to practise spellings with your child and read with them as often as you can. The children have also been given a Purple Mash log-in which can be found on the inside of their reading records. The children are very familiar with the website and it is a great tool that can support their learning at school and at home. Please feel free to log-in with your child and practise some writing, spelling or number work.

Don't forget next Wednesday is Fox Class assembly where your children will share their learning with you. You will also be invited into Fox class to look at the learning that has been going on.
