Foxes and the story of Holi

17.11.17

What we have been learning this week

This week in English the children have all done some brilliant story writing. First we practised retelling the story of Holi using story language and actions and then we used our story mountains and word banks to help us write each part of the story. Well done children for fantastic story language, accurate sentences and doing your best handwriting!

In maths this week the children have been learning to solve subtraction problems. We began by recapping the symbols and language associated with subtraction. The children used number cards to make their own subtraction number sentence, remembering that the biggest number needs to go first. Then they moved on to solving problems. First they used concrete objects to help them, then they used counting back on number lines and counting back from a number in their head.

Also this week we have learnt about keeping safe near roads. We tested our school tabards and book-bags to see how the reflective strips help car lights to see us in dark evenings.

We are also very grateful to Mrs Harmer for all the time she has spent with the children this week on a special Christmas angel project.

Finally well done to all the children for a brilliant class assembly on Wednesday.

What we shall be working on next week

Next week we will be revisiting shape and direction in maths. Continuing our topic of celebrations we will be learning about the Rio Carnival.  In English we will explore non-fiction texts and produce information writing about the carnival.

How you can help with home learning

Any practise of counting backwards will help the children become more fluent in number - start by always counting back from 10 or 20, then start from any number under 20 or beyond if your child is confident.

Please help your child to notice aspects of road safety that you pass and use pavements, curbs, zebra crossings, pelican crossings, and "stop look and listen".

General information

From now on Yr 1 children will have the opportunity to change their library books with a parent helper each Monday. Please ensure their library book is in their book-bag so they can choose a new one. Many thanks.

Christmas play costume letters will be sent home shortly.
