Badgers count their money!

03.11.17

What we have been learning this week

This week in maths Badger Class has been learning about money. We have counted coins and begun to recognise how to make different amounts of money using different coins. Thank you so much to those of you who took their children out with some coins to spend. We have used coins in the classroom and the children seem to be much better at understanding which coins are worth more than others.

In English this week, we have been looking at The Gunpowder Plot and learning how to describe people using more ambitious language to help to create a picture in the reader’s head.

We have used adverbials of time to sequence the events of the plot and understanding why this weekend we celebrate Bonfire Night. We have also thought about how words change when they are written in the past tense.

As part of our topic we have been learning about the Gunpowder Plot. We looked in detail at what happened and the children were particularly interested in how the plotters were tortured before being hung, drawn and quartered!

What we shall be working on next week

Next week in maths we will be continuing to learn about money and recognising coins and notes. We will be focusing on comparing different amounts and also begin to solve problems involving money.

In English we will be learning about Samuel Pepys’ Diary as we head off to Pudding Lane to find out about The Great Fire of London. We will be giving out lines during the week for children to learn for their class assembly. This will be a short presentation in which the children will share with you some of their learning from the past few weeks.

How you can help with home learning

To support your child at home it would be really useful if you could practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Using coins would be a fantastic help and also give them the sense of how ‘big’ amounts of money are. Can they make amounts using different coins? Why can’t we make 25p using 2p coins?
