Badgers and the Gunpowder Plot!

10.11.17

What we have been learning this week

This week in maths, Badger Class has been continuing to learn about money. We have counted coins and found ways to add amounts of money together.  The children have been working hard at solving word problems and investigating using different coins to make the same amount of money.

In English we have finished learning about The Gunpowder Plot and begun practising for our assembly as well as beginning to find out more about our new topic, The Great Fire of London. We were visited by a Londoner from 1666 who described what happened when she discovered the fire had begun.

We have also continued to learn about writing in the past tense and how we add suffixes to words. We have also been using Purple Mash during Guided Reading sessions to practise reading and writing our sentences.

In our topic work this week we have had a busy time learning about different materials and sorting them. We will use this knowledge over the coming weeks to think about what materials buildings were made of in the past and why they changed as a result of the Great Fire.

What we shall be working on next week

Next week in maths we will be continuing to learn about money and looking at the concept of "change". We will be focusing on using different methods to subtract money and finding the difference between amounts.

In English we will be learning about Samuel Pepys’ Diary as we head off to Pudding Lane and have a go at writing our own diaries.

It's going to be a busy week next week as we will be practising for our assembly.

How you can help with home learning

To support your child at home it would be really useful if you could practice counting backwards and forwards, particularly reminding the children about the 'teens' numbers. Some of the children have confused these with 'ty' numbers, eg, twenty, thirty, etc.

I would also appreciate it if you could listen to your child practice their line for the assembly so that they are confident with how to pronounce all of their words.
