Foxes learn all about characters!

19.05.17

Fox Class started by looking at familiar characters and sorting them into groups. We tried hard to think of lots of really high quailty words to describe characters. The children had some great discussions and gave good examples of when characters such as dragons and trolls are not always the bad characters we expect. Then the children chose a reptile or amphibian to write about. They began planning their name, their personality and their appearance and developed these ideas in the following session by using adjectives to describe their character. The children showed excellent imagination and used ideas from stories they are familiar with. Next week the children will use their ideas and plans to write a fact file on their invented creature.

In maths this week we have been reading, writing and interpreting mathematical statements involving addition and subtraction. We have used number lines to solve missing number sums and tricky word problems. We also learnt a few new number songs to help us learn mathematical  language: there was rather a lot of fun movement and dancing before lunch!

Next week we will be counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s, using arrays, patterns, pictorial representations and objects to share into equal groups.  On a long car journey maybe you can encourage your child to count forwards and backwards to you in 2s, 5s and 10s?

On Thursday in Science we learnt all about amphibians, reptiles and mammals. We then sorted them neatly into the correct groups. Foxes really enjoyed this activity as we chatted about the difference between the animals.

In RE this week the children continued to learn about Islam. They remembered lots of facts from their learning so far before learning that the Qur'an is the Holy book for Muslims. We explored how Muslims treat this book with respect by practising Wudu (washing) before handling it. We also made comparisons between what we know about Christianity and Islam by looking at similarities and differences.
