Foxes and their forest-collages galore!

12.05.17

Fox Class decided to change the ending of the traditional tale in literacy this week.  After learning how to identify the five main parts of a story, and making story mountains, they went on to plan a different resolution and ending to the story.   Using fantastic story writing skills, super imaginations and learning tools, their own versions were quite imaginative!  They really enjoyed deciding that the turnip might go to a museum, fly away to Never Never Land or even get sprinkled with fairy dust!   On Thursday they redrafted and edited their work and then shared it with each other by hot-seating and reading aloud to the class.

Next week we will begin to look at characters from traditional tales and focus on why they may show good or bad traits.  We will discuss what they look like in detail and what sort of character they might be. Can we use adjectives to make our sentences more exciting?

In maths this week, Foxes have been focusing on learning and recalling number bonds to 20. We began by recapping pairs of numbers that together make 10 by using our fingers and classroom equipment. Then we looked at patterns to help us realise that knowing number bonds to 10 can help us to know pairs of numbers that total 20. We found lots of different ways to make 20 using objects to help us and recorded what we found out in number sentences. The children also have been exploring addition and subtraction word problems and practising using lots of different vocabulary: add, plus, more, count on and take-away, subtract, less, count back. We also began looking at the relationship between addition and subtraction to help us understand that they are inverse operations (18 + 2 = 20 or 20 - 2 = 18).

Next week in maths, we will be applying our understanding of numbers to 20 in solving one-step problems with addition and subtraction.

This week we sent home our bean seeds from our science experiment. Not all the beans sprouted but we talked about what may have happened. We sorted the seeds into those that had grown and not grown and noticed that all the seeds that had not sprouted were in soil that had too much water. The children agreed that if they were going to repeat this experiment the seeds in a bag needed a paper towel, not too much water and light.

The children have also really enjoyed using our new playground equipment at lunch times and for one of our PE lessons this week. I challenged the children to practise balancing in different ways on the equipment and we all had a wonderful afternoon.

Following on from learning the four seasons of the year and how the trees around us change, Fox Class had great fun making tree collages using different types of paper.

They decided carefully which colours to use for their season, then they scrunched, ripped and rolled the paper into many different shapes.  Lots of children commented on how they were working hard using their learning tools of sticking at it and team work. They certainly did and their art work is just beautiful!

Well done Foxes!
