Learning and Growing in Badger class

10.03.17

The children are all filling in a footprint on their bookmarks, one each day for the whole of Lent.  This reminds us of the Easter story and Jesus' journey into the desert.  We also spent time thinking about Easter being a happy and sad time for Christians and we learnt more about the symbols of Easter.

Later in the week we took advantage of the better weather and began to clear the weeds from the vegetable patch.

The children loved digging and they also spent time planting marrow seeds which came from a marrow grown by Mr Luckham.  Once these have begun to shoot, they will bring them home.

I enjoyed taking some of the children's books to one of our partner infant schools this week.  This allows us to see the work that goes on in similar schools and to learn from each other.  I felt very proud of the children's efforts, especially when looking at their first pieces of writing and comparing them to those that they are doing now - what a hard working bunch!

We had some good maths sessions this week, great learning of times tables as well as some work with 3 digit numbers. I was pleased to see that all the children were able to order 3-digit numbers and had a good knowledge of the value of each digit within the number.

Next week in maths we will be solving problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Everyone did really well wtih division some weeks ago, but it is a concept that we need to continue to embed.

The children have also begun to use the big construction equipment.

They have access to this as part of their learning groups and it is fantastic for encouraging creativity, discussion and engineering skills.  They have already learnt how to use the spanner to make their models secure and they have worked so well together.

If you have any spare time, a website that I have really enjoyed using with the children in the past is www.explore.org.  This shows a huge amount of different webcams in many parts of the world.  You can watch sea lions lounging on the beach, humming birds, bison, ospreys, etc.  It is very addictive but great learning watching them over a whole season.

Have a good weekend.
