Fox Class revisit place value

15.06.18

What we have been learning this week

This week in maths we have been revisiting place value. This is the children’s understanding of the number system and the "value" of digits in numbers. We have been comparing numbers and ordering them, as well as putting numbers onto a line in the right place.

In literacy this week we have been using adjectives to describe characters and also recapping punctuation, looking at question marks and exclamation marks for some children. The children have loved writing "lost" posters and writing speech between characters too.

In topic lessons we have been investigating paper aeroplanes and how far they can fly. We will be recording these results and comparing who flew their plane the furthest. We have also learnt about Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia. The children were great investigators, working out clues to her identity and why she was famous. We have also been creating ‘big art’ linked to our focus of flight, to go towards our Art Gallery piece.

What we shall be working on next week

Next week we shall be working on telling the time in maths. We will recap o’clock and half past, leading on to telling the time to the quarter of an hour. In literacy we will be looking at the text "Lost and Found" by Oliver Jeffers. The children will be learning the text and looking to creating their own version of it.

How you can help with home learning

At home it would be great if you could count forwards and backwards with your children in jumps of 2, 5 and 10. The children have marching actions that we do in class to help keep rhythm and recognise the patterns of each series of numbers.

General information

From this week the spelling test will move to a Thursday. I will keep the children’s yellow spelling books overnight so that I can mark the spellings and record their mark in the ‘comments’ section at the bottom. In Yr 1 the expectation is that the children will have six spellings per week, made up of three words using the sound of the week and three "tricky words".  These are words that are difficult for children to sound out and, as a result, they need to learn them by sight and spelling.
