Foxes Get Athletic!

What we have learnt this week

In literacy this week we have been focusing on developing accuracy in sentence writing. The children spotted and corrected mistakes in sentences using our 5-finger checker. This helps them to remember to use capital letters, punctuation, finger spaces, neat handwriting and to sit their writing on the line. We also encourage the children to look at each other's writing and help them identify things that are good and aspects that could be improved. The children also wrote about what they know about some famous landmarks around the world. The children had great knowledge and knew some very interesting facts. It was a real pleasure to award lots of our "Purple Polishing Presentation Awards" for fantastic effort and presentation in their sentence writing for this session.

In maths this week we have continued with our learning about time. We have used analogue clocks to learn to recognise o'clock and half past times. The children also made their own clocks to help them recognise the long minute hand and the short hour hand. These clocks had a line to mark half to help the children recognise half of the clock and therefore help them to recognise half past times. Some children also solved some time word problems. We also discussed digital clocks and where children may find things that tell us the time.

What a superb morning Fox Class had on Thursday this week when we tok part in the Haslemere Confederation Sports Morning at Woolmer Hill School. We spent the morning working in small groups being led by older sports leaders from the secondary school. Activities included reactions and acceleration, throwing, jumping, sprinting and relays. The game of running and then forming groups of different numbers under timed conditions was particularly good fun involving the whole class at the same time.  The sports teacher even commented on the children's fantastic mathematical skills on the sports field! Foxes really enjoyed their morning and did themselves proud.

What we shall be working on next week

We are really looking forward to starting  our week next week with our whole school trip on Monday.  In literacy we will start to plan a story about going on a journey, and in maths we will be learning about how to use coins to pay and give change.

How parents can help with home learning

Please encourage your child to continue reading o'clock and half past times and spend time discussing any of the example questions below:

  • How many seconds are in 1 minute?
  • How many minutes are in 1 hour?
  • What can you find in your home that tells you the time?
  • What is the time when the long hand is on the 6?
  • What is the time when the long hand is on the 12?
  • You start cooking at 4 o'clock. The food takes 1 hour to cook. What time will the food be ready?
  • How many star jumps can you do in 10 seconds?
  • Estimate and then count how many star jumps you can do in 30 seconds?  How many in 1 minute?

General Information

Our thanks again to all the parents who kindly gave up their time to come with us to Woolmer Hill on Thursday.
