Badgers are shrinking!

16.06.17

What we have learnt this week

In English this week the children have been completing a diary entry. The children imagined they had shrunk, similar to Alice in Wonderland, so they were millimetres tall!  They thought about all of the wonderful things they could do if they were that small, and came up with some brilliant ideas! They produced some very exciting diary entries about their experience as a tiny person. To support the children with their editing they shared their diary entry with a friend. Their partner then came up with suggestions on how to improve their work. They have also started thinking about rhyme and poetry this week on the topic of flowers and nature.

In mathis this week the children have been learning about place value and they are now able to understand that a 2-digit number is made up of tens and ones. They grasped this concept very quickly, so they were challenged to think about 3-digit numbers, and they now know that a 3 digit number is made up of hundreds, tens and ones and can represent this using Dienes and drawings. The children then progressed on to thinking about how their understanding of place value can support their knowledge of money. Badger Class also had a visit from one of the maths teachers from Waverley Abbey on Thursday and the children really enjoyed it, plus it gave those children who are going to Waverly Abbey next year an insight to what it will be like.

Also this week, the children were asked a big question: "What is a Church?" and their responses were very thought provoking.  We also discussed about how the word "church" doesn’t necessarily mean a building - it could mean the people who come together to learn about Jesus and his teachings. With this in mind we decided to design and create our own versions of a church, with some children sticking to the traditional building and some children creating a completely different type of building to fit the needs of a church.

With the weather being so beautiful this week Badger Class also took the opportunity to sketch some of the nature and the wildlife on Arthur’s field.

What we shall be working on next week

In English the children will be continuing to learn about different styles of poetry and they will also be writing a recount about their school trip on Monday. In maths they will be interpreting and constructing simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables.

How parents can help with home learning

To support your child at home you could vote on your favourite type of fruit or sweet and create a pictogram or a bar graph. Also, the children will be taking part in a talent show towards the end of the school term that they will perform to the rest of the school. The children may perform in a group or individually. If you could discuss and support your child in practising for this at home that would be very much appreciated.

General Information

Badger Class are really looking forward to their whole school trip on Monday - it should be a lovely day and the children will really enjoy it.  As a result of us being out of school on Monday, Show and Tell will be on Tuesday next week and will be Silver group.
