Yr 2 and The Great Fire of London!

13.01.17

Learning about The Great Fire of London is always an area that is motivating and a great chance to learn about the history of our capital city.

The children worked in groups to complete a time-line of what happened over the four days that the fire burned.

We also had great fun making Great Fire of London cakes - a first for the children at St John's!  The recipe was written by diarist, Samuel Pepys, and we followed it carefully - except for the inclusion of "sack" which is the wine or sherry that we replaced with apple juice!

We enjoyed using one of our new cookers - it was so much more efficient than what we had in the past!

If you are able to follow-up their learning about The Great Fire of London with a visit to the Museum of London, the Monument in Pudding Lane or to Samuel Pepys' Memorial Garden in Seething Lane, the children would just love it!

On Monday I will be sending home a list of "tricky" words that are included in the Government's "Letters & Sounds" initiative.  I would very much appreciate it if you could regularly practise these with your children as there are still many errors in their independent writing.
