Badgers and Grace Darling

27.01.17

Badgers spent time this week watching a short programme all about her life and wondering what it might have been like to live in a lighthouse.

On Tuesday we had a lovely session on the school field and continued learning how to play hockey.  This was the first time we had played short matches and it was impressive, not only to see the children's skills, but also to watch them showing good sportsmanship and congratulating the other side.

We have begun to make our lighthouses and you will see the finished product next week.

All the children worked with growing independence and definite care, appreciating the steps involved and following instructions.

You may be aware that the children work in independent learning groups for a short part of the day.  We use this time to improve computer skills, reading, phonics and maths.

This week the independent maths groups have been completing maths loop cards, encouraging them to work on quick mental arithmetic and to work as a team.

We hope you enjoy the children's homework - writing their competition stories.  If you go onto the "500 Words" BBC Radio 2 website, you will find some of last year's stories that can be listened to.  They are great fun and we have spent a little time this week listening to them.  Please be aware that the children don't have to write 500 words!  This would be an awful lot for many of them.

Next week our maths will continue to focus on division, a skill that the children have tackled really well this week. We will also learn about telling the time, aiming for all children to be able to tell o'clock, half past and quarter past the hour, with some children also knowing the 5-minute intervals.

Some reminders... please make sure your child has his or her spelling book on Mondays, outdoor PE kit in school on Tuesdays, and reading book/green record book every day!  Thank you!

Have a lovely weekend.
