Foxes and their letter writing!

23.02.18

What we have been learning this week

In English this week the children have been sending and receiving letters. We began by discussing all the different types of post the children had ever received, including postcards, parcels, emails and birthday cards. To kick-off our new topic the children have written letters to a supermarket asking where some of our foods come from. We will be sending these off and waiting for a reply. In our Guided Reading we read a letter together and discussed features such as the address, date, names and the purpose of the letter.

In maths we have been learning about two-digit numbers. The children have used a variety of resources for practical activities and drawings to learn that two-digit numbers are made up of two parts, the ten and the ones. We use this language with the children and encourage them to use these words when talking about the parts in a number.

We have been exploring numbers up to 50 but have been practising counting in 10s beyond 100 so that the children can see the number pattern repeating.

Also this week we began our new topic, "Where does our food come from?", by talking about what we already know and what we would like to find out. We began learning about different animal groups too, and this week we focused on mammals and reptiles.

What we shall be working on next week

We will be exploring the story 'The Rainbow Fish' for Book Week. We will look at the themes of friendship and forgiveness and make links to our school Values. As you know, the children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character on Friday.

How you can help wtih home learning

Please provide opportunities for regular spelling and reading practise at home. The spellings that are sent home reinforce the sounds we are learning in the week in phonics and are words that the children could then be able to recall for independent writing. Regular practise of these over the two pages in their spelling book will help them learn the sounds for more than just the spelling test.
