Fox Class and their "Big Write"!

01.12.17

What we have been learning this week

This week the whole school has taken part in a "Big Write".  Mrs Marshall came and delivered a message first thing on Monday morning to say that something had been discovered in our outside classroom! The children excitedly went and found evidence to show a party had taken place in our gazebo. This led to lots of questioning and writing about what facts we had found.

The following day the children asked an eye-witness some questions before working together in teams to prepare and record their own news reports. All this learning prepared the children to write their own newspaper reports on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately the mystery is yet to be solved but there are rumours in Yr 1 that Father Christmas had made an early visit to St John's or that the teachers had a party!

In maths this week we have been developing fluency in number. The children have been practising counting to and across 100, ensuring they can count on or back from different starting numbers. They have also been exploring different ways to make totals, including pairs of numbers that make 10.

On Monday afternoon the children listened respectfully to each other during a circle time. The children were shown pictures of children feeling different emotions and the children were asked to recognise the emotions and to suggest strategies to cope with them. The children then shared times they have felt, happy, sad, worried or angry with each.

What we shall be working on next week

Next week is beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  We will be retelling and writing the Christmas story in literacy and continuing lots of singing for our Christmas play.

In maths we will be learning to recognise and use coins to 20p, and to tell the time to the hour and half hour.

How you can help with home learning

To support your child at home please continue to support them in practising their spellings little and often throughout the week. Please also ensure they bring their yellow spelling book into school on a Wednesday for the test.

It would also help to play any counting games to practise counting beyond 20. This will help them to see the repeating patterns of the units and build more confidence with knowing the 10s numbers.

General Information

This week a number of children did not have all the correct PE kit for games on Tuesday. Please check your child's PE bag regularly to check they have all the correct items and that all items are clearly named. They should have navy trousers, t-shirt, navy sweatshirt, spare socks and trainers during the next few cold months to keep them warm in our games sessions.

Please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat in school every day.

Finally, if anyone would like to accompany us to help on our upcoming trip please come to see a member of staff in Yr 1. Many thanks.
