Maths

At St John’s, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to build strong foundations, nurture curiosity, and help children develop both confidence and enjoyment in the subject.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, developing strong conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately.

  • Develop problem-solving skills, applying their mathematical knowledge to a range of routine and non-routine problems, breaking them down into manageable steps and persevering when challenges arise.

  • Grow their knowledge, skills, vocabulary and understanding using a concrete–pictorial–abstract approach that supports deep and secure learning.

  • Our principal aim is for children to become confident, independent mathematicians who enjoy the subject and understand its relevance to everyday life.
